Stroll back through time, one headstone at a time

Mill Road Cemetery – opened in 1848

What better way to welcome Halloween season than a walk through the local cemetery? It has rained nonstop the last few days so I decided to purchase an umbrella and explore. I was off in search of a new coffee shop with a large window to pass the morning and I stumbled across the best spooky cemetery.

I have wandered many different cemeteries, mostly in the United States. The old style names always are a treat, and speaking of treats some of the older ladies place their recipes on their headstones since they quite literally took it to their grave. Typically the US cemeteries have well manicured lawns that are always mowed and headstones in a neat ordered row.

Cemeteries in the United Kingdom are more a public space for all to enjoy, with wandering paths through the headstones and information provided. Dogs wander between headstones chasing pinecones and benches are scattered in quiet reflection areas. The vines seemed to only be trimmed when they encroach the pathways, not when they threaten to overtake a headstone.

Large vines twisting every way with headstones barely standing straight gives the cemetery the cozy horror movie set atmosphere. The steady raindrops on the umbrella help create the spooky undertones as my feet squish in the mud pathway. I continue exploring around each new bend looking for the way through. Google maps swears this is the best way to the new coffee shop.

One large dirty chai latte later and I find myself back at the cemetery choosing to wander the paths once more. Who doesn’t love a little spookyness for the day?
